As I am a paraprofessional it is a bit complex to describe what has been learned here and how to apply it.
I have helped ELL students to learn English, albeit usually only one to 3 at a time.
The chunking and stopping each time you read a few sentences may take a great deal of time. I think there si NO better way to help a student to get a grasp of what the story is about, and what has already been read. Since we cannot know their previous knowledge of their language or any other language prior… this is the only way I know how to sink it into them, what the story means, and how to anticipate any outcome, without the knowledge of the story at all.A short passage must take an exorbitant amount of time in order to have that student get the setting, plot and all that is involved.
It is the only way!!!

As an ELL myself, learning English in Kindergarten… this was never make known to me. The way it is perfectly broken down with just the correct choice of words even if you are not bilingual. I will need to go over this course again and again every year in order to use the strategies included here.
The vocabulary of the telling of the story of the George character, and individual characteristics were most useful. Content specific character traits or possibilities… most carefully broken down is how story telling should always be, stopping, explaining.. moving on ONLY when the last three sentences (just an example) have been understood and perhaps an example given.Wishing I could break it down with new ideas.
Linda Lee WayneParticipantSo true, putting sentence starters to put sentence structure as an ELL is not easy.. but the examples given are great. As an ELL myself… I understand what must be done in order to NOT struggle. Foundation skills are a must with key words.
I also ask what a CVC word like “skip” is… I may have to hear the lecture again. Love the idea of the association with pictures would have been great when I was a child!
This seems to make a great deal of sense!!!!! Bravo
Linda Lee WayneParticipantI am a paraprofessional who has had experience in so much more Ethan my title will explain. I am lucky enough to have taught English to non English speakers. I have created a program with special books as I too was not an English speaker being born in America! I look forward to learning more through this course.
