High school may be the toughest period of schooling, for both emergent bilinguals and their teachers. For newcomers the stakes are high - learn English and advanced content and go to college - in four years or less. And learners who have been in the system since elementary or middle school have typically not been able to test out of the NYSESLAT because they haven’t received adequate instruction in reading and writing, at a time when they need it to graduate.
