Description
Teachers! Use this graphic organizer with your newcomers in Grades 3-12 to assess their receptive understanding of what they learned (e.g., an academic concept, a story or passage from a text). Receptive understanding means students don’t have to speak, read, or write to show you what they know. Rather, drawing allows them to demonstrate understanding. In addition, this is an opportunity to work on academic vocabulary. Learners should label their drawing in both English and their Home Language using the academic vocabulary in English you have explicitly taught them and physical or online dictionaries to look up translations. Students can also work in pairs to discuss their drawings and the translations of words.
Customize and differentiate this worksheet to include different languages in the instructions, more or less word boxes, and an English vocabulary word bank if your students need support remembering their academic vocabulary.
Prek-2 teachers! Adjust this organizer for your little ones to include a larger drawing space, vocabulary word bank for labeling, and substitute written for oral translations if you plan to use Home Language in your classroom.
