curriculum tailored to english language learners
I currently work with NYC teachers to adapt their school’s existing curricula to meet the language and literacy needs of emergent bi/multi-lingual students. This includes integrating schema-building and vocabulary into content, and foundational literacy instruction in reading and writing. An understanding of the needs of the students, teachers and school, as well as the Common Core/Next Generation standards, and diverse ages and groups of English Language Learners all contribute to the design of the curriculum.
I also design activities, materials and curricula that are freely available for teachers. Currently I am working on a year long curriculum for stand alone English as a New Language classes for middle school newcomers.
professional experience
I have extensive professional experience designing and contributing to curricula for emergent bi/multi-lingual learners. I am also a professor at CUNY, where I teach and train both pre- and in-service teachers of English as New Language (ENL). My particular expertise is in the needs of Students with Interrupted Formal Education (SIFE) as well as students with language-based learning disabilities like dyslexia.
