Professional Development Workshops
I offer full and half-day professional development workshops, and multi-day series for individual schools, both in person here in NYC (and in other locations outside of NYC) or virtually.
Topics I facilitate include:
- Linguistics for Teachers of Emergent Bilinguals,
- Oral Language to Print: Getting Emergent Bilinguals from Oral Language to Literacy,
- Foundational Literacy Skills and Content Integration,
- Writing Development for Emergent Bilinguals,
- English as a New Language – Stand Alone and Integrated Instruction.
I have been contracted both privately and through the NYC DOE and NYSED.
Instructional Coaching
An integral part of my workshops include instructional, one-on-one, in-classroom coaching.
After presenting a topic in-depth during the workshop, I follow up by visiting teachers’ classrooms to observe, model strategies, and coach them on how to apply the techniques we have studied in the workshops to the classroom, and to tailor my training to each teacher’s unique situation.
Coaching can take anywhere from 3 or more visits, depending on the needs of the school. The first visit is usually an observation, where I become acquainted with the teacher and his or her classroom.
Our work for the subsequent visits includes working on lesson plans together, setting specific goals, modeling instructional techniques, and the teacher becoming comfortable using the technique with my support.
Every coaching session includes an extensive debrief after the class, and whole group debrief in the subsequent workshop.
After visiting the school, I follow up with the participants and school administrators to answer questions, offer more resources, and check in with progress.
