ingrid heidrick, ph.d.
I am a Ph.D. in Linguistics and an Orton-Gillingham-trained practitioner and offer private tutoring for students with dyslexia and other struggling readers. I work with children of all ages and adults.
what is orton Gillingham?
The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a research-based methodology, developed specifically for dyslexics, that incorporates multisensory techniques (visual, aural, oral, kinesthetic) as well as systematic, explicit instruction of decoding and spelling in English. It is widely known to benefit students who learn differently.
Professional Experience
In addition to my training and clinical experience in OG, I have over 10 years of professional experience teaching English as a Second Language, researching struggling readers in the NYC public schools, and training teachers in research-based techniques. I also have a child with dyslexia and have navigated the the complex world of support services here in NYC.
getting started
I first provide a free consultation for parents, to learn about the family’s needs, and give parents and the student an opportunity to ask questions. This can be done over the phone or in person.
Should the family decide to hire me, there is some paperwork to be filled out. Tutoring sessions typically take place twice weekly for an hour in my home office (located on the Upper West Side near 72nd St.).
I then spend approximately one to two sessions assessing and evaluating the student in order to make a plan for instruction. Parents are given a summary of my assessment, short term goals, and my plan of instruction.
I begin with lessons that are tailored specifically to the student’s needs and abilities. Parents are given regular progress reports. With permission, I liaison with the child’s school and other therapists to maximize academic support.
