I am a Ph.D. in Linguistics and an Orton-Gillingham-trained practitioner and offer private tutoring for students with dyslexia and other struggling readers. The Orton-Gillingham (OG) approach is a research-based methodology, developed specifically for dyslexics, that incorporates multisensory techniques (visual, aural, oral, kinesthetic) as well as systematic, explicit instruction of decoding and spelling. It is widely known to benefit students who learn differently.
In addition to my training and experience in OG, I have over 10 years of professional experience teaching English as a Second Language, researching struggling readers in the NYC public schools, and training teachers in research-based techniques. I also have a child with dyslexia and have navigated the the complex world of support services here in NYC.
I first provide a consultation for parents, during which I learn about the child and make a plan for intervention and additional support. I assess the child and tailor lessons specifically to his or her needs and abilities. Tutoring sessions typically take place for an hour twice weekly in the student’s home or my home office. Goals are set and parents are given regular progress reports. With permission, I can liaison with the child’s school to maximize academic support. I also work with adults.
